Profile Information

About Me:
Harnessing their popularity to fight poverty, Massukos make music that is not only phenomenally beautiful but also a powerful force for change. Massukos have an enviable reputation as the country's most successful band but they are also making their mark as initiators of social change. Originating from Niassa in northern Mozambique, one of the poorest parts of Africa, Massukos speak out against the hardships that have affected their lives. Passionate about what they do, the band travels for miles to remote villages to deliver simple life-saving messages such as “more condoms less partners”.

Feliciano dos Santos - the leader of Massukos - is also the director of Estamos, who are involved with the installation of latrines and clean water points, as well as hygiene and HIV/AIDS education. Feliciano is a 2008 Goldman Environmental Prize winner.

Microfund Massukos & Hesperian's Health Care Work

A community guide to environmental health

About Hesperian: For the past 30 years, Hesperian has developed, published and distributed health materials including the book Where There Is No Doctor for poor people around the planet without access to formal medical care. Hesperian books are simply written, collaboratively developed, and heavily illustrated for low-literacy readers. Translations of various Hesperian publications have been completed or are in progress in more than 100 languages serving communities in every region of the world.

Hesperian’s New Book:
With the help of Massukos’ lead singer Feliciano dos Santos (and hundreds more grassroots collaborators worldwide) Hesperian is about to publish A Community Guide to Environmental Health, a revolutionary new resource for people worldwide battling the effects of environmental degradation on their own and their communities’ health. The book offers tested, low-cost strategies for environmental problems ranging from water security and sanitation through toxic exposure and deforestation.

Hesperian’s Gratis Fund:
Health information should belong to everyone. Hesperian gives away thousands of health books free each year to health workers in poor communities in the developing world through our Gratis Fund (we also offer free downloads and an “open copyright” allowing others to use our materials not-for-profit without paying any royalties).
