Bruce Jones is an established member of the Canadian music community. No other musician in the country has managed to integrate rock, Brazilian and various other folkloric elements into such a personal and ongoing series of musical statements.
Bruce has a long and successful performance career. In the past year he led bands performing several times in Niagara on the Lake and Toronto. He also was featured in Manzanillo Mexico at the Karmina Palace (now the Barceló) and Charlie’s Place, Manzanillo’s leading jazz club.
In previous years, Bruce has successfully led bands performing at the all the Harbourfront festivals, including WOMAD and Hispanic festivals and others, to widespread acclaim. Bruce’s regular performances at the The Bamboo and all major venues in Toronto attracted a large following of music aficionados and enthusiastic dancers. His bands Cocada and Da also incorporated some of Canada’s best young jazz musicians who appreciated his original sound and traditional Brazilian rhythms. Da and other musical ensembles led by Bruce have been featured in concerts across Canada, Brazil, Cape Verde, West Africa and Argentina in venues from worldbeat to jazz and dance.
• His CDs, *SARAVA CRIOLA* and *CANADA EH!* were acclaimed by critic Andrew Sun, as "among the most fascinating Canadian records ever made".
• Bruce founded the first samba school in Canada; “Unidos do Canada”. He inspired many excellent musicians to continue the samba tradition in Canada.
• He had a ten year involvement with Toronto’s Caribana, where he won ‘best traditional ensemble’ 7 years running.
• His song ‘Africa Feliz’ won third place in the John Lennon Songwriting contest.
This background has contributed to his extraordinary range of abilities in the areas of composition, arranging and performing as both an instrumentalist notably on guitar and Brazilian percussion instruments and as a vocalist.
Bruce’s teaching career began at the Eli Kassner Academy and continues today. Bruce is a gifted teacher who has taught a generation of guitarists, many of who now have successful musical careers of their own. Bruce commenced his own musical studies at the Academia Paulista de Musica in Sao Paulo, Brasil, and upon his return to Canada, continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Players in his bands have included: Perry White, Steven Donald, Chi Sharpe, Rick Lazar, Daniel Barnes, Dave Field, Bill McBirnie, Armando Larry Borg, Mike Sereny, Bill Norman, Art Avalos, Phil Dwyer, Etric Lyons, Bob Siboney, Zulema Clas, Ron Allen, Lionel Williams, Penner Mackay, Marl Lalama, Steve Goldberger, Jessie Mackay, Andy Mackay, Eliane Abolicao.
Bruce has also been the recipient of numerous arts awards from “FACTOR”, the Toronto Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council. His production and engineering abilities have also been utilized by various artists through his production house “Dada Music Productions”. Bruce lives in Niagara-on-the-Lake performing, writing and recording music, teaching music and raising a young family.
